Context

This is a voluntary post for which you must have institutional support and your collection must be a BIAZA member. The post is within the Rhino Focus Group (RFG) which sits under the Ungulate Subgroup (USG), which is part of the British & Irish Association of Zoos & Aquariums (BIAZA) Mammal Working Group (MWG), sitting under the Species Advisory Committee (SAC).  As a RFG member you will report to the Ungulate Subgroup Chair and Mammal Working Group Chair/Vice Chair.

Role Summary

The purpose of this role is to support the delivery of the objectives of the RFG, driving forward development and awareness of best practice in rhino husbandry. This is a Focus Group which means it is a temporary group established for the achievement of specified objectives.  Upon completion of the agreed objectives the group may disband or on review may be made into a permanent group within the wider BIAZA structure.

 Responsibilities

  • To support the RFG in achieving the objectives set.
  • To contribute to RFG activities and discussions, including data collection and compilation, identifying and initiating research, sharing information, producing care sheets and other husbandry documents.
  • To attend and contribute to RFG meetings wherever possible (typically 3-4 meetings per year, usually online).
  • To contribute to the organization of any RFG workshops and attend in person wherever possible.
  • To keep up to date with developments in good practice and legislation in respect of rhino care and conservation and share news and updates with the group where relevant.
  • To be a point of contact for the BIAZA Office and take an active role in answering enquiries about rhino care and welfare whenever necessary.
  • To be a good ambassador for BIAZA and the MWG.
  • To assist in the aims of the broader BIAZA strategy and the Species Advisory Committee.
