The role
To undertake genetic and genomic work, preparing and analysing DNA and contributing to the day to day running of the RZSS WildGenes laboratory facility. As a member of the Conservation department, the post holder will contribute to the development of RZSS in achieving its Mission and Aims.
This role is a 3 month fixed term role where the wroking hours are 37.5 hours per week.
Some of the things you’ll do:
- Based within the RZSS WildGenes lab, Edinburgh Zoo.
- Performing wet-lab molecular genetic techniques and feeding data back to the relevant member/s of staff in the WildGenes team.
- DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis and genomic library preparation.
- Works within clearly defined procedures with periodic supervision.
What we’re looking for:
- A BSc degree in a biological discipline or equivalent qualifications or experience
- Experience of working in a molecular laboratory.
- Experience of DNA extraction.
- Attention to detail and ability to work in a controlled and consistent way.
- Ability to follow complex molecular biology protocols.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with other technicians, bioinformaticians and conservation staff via email, teams, phone and face-to-face.
- Experience of working with minimal supervision, demonstrating good organisational and planning skills.
