The Objectives of the Membership & Licensing Committee (MLC) are:
- To ensure that the membership maintains high standards according to the Memorandum and Articles of the Association, the Requirements for Membership and BIAZA policies.
- To advise Board on membership applications and complaints against members and to make appropriate recommendations on these following consideration and investigation.
- To monitor, and where appropriate assist with, the formation, introduction, and implementation of UK and EU legislation as it affects the Members of BIAZA.
Members of the Committee do this:
- by ensuring that collections, organisations and individuals applying for membership meet the requirements of the Constitution of BIAZA, particularly the requirements for membership.
- by reviewing reports of inspections carried out at Members within the jurisdiction of operational zoo legislation and inspecting those Members and applicants who hold a collection of animals that are not subject to zoo licensing legislation.
- by reviewing reports of accreditation screenings carried out at Members.
- by maintaining close contact with relevant government departments to ensure that zoo legislation operates fairly and to offer assistance in the development of the SSSMZP and other legislation affecting zoos and aquariums.
- by reviewing information Members are required to submit to meet the requirements for membership and offering advice or carrying out inspections as necessary.
- by reviewing the reports submitted by mentors of Provisional Members.
- by reviewing complaints concerning Members, carrying out inspections as necessary and making appropriate recommendations to Board including the application of sanctions where necessary.
There are four meetings a year, usually held online.
This is a voluntary post for which you must have institutional support and be from senior levels of BIAZA Full Member zoos and aquariums: curator, manager or higher.
