ROLE:  Environmental Impact & Sustainability Working Group Member   

CONTEXT: This is a voluntary post for which you must have institutional support and be a staff member at a BIAZA Full Member. The post is within the Environmental Impact & Sustainability Working Group (EISWG) which is part of BIAZA’s Mission Enabling Committee (MEC). Group members are welcome from any staff department at BIAZA members who have experience in sustainability and who have responsibility for sustainability within their organisation. In particular EISWG would welcome expressions of interest from members in Ireland and Wales, based at aquariums and smaller sites and/or with knowledge of native species. 

ROLE SUMMARY: to support EISWG to encourage an environmentally sustainable approach in BIAZA and its members, raise sustainability and climate change awareness and provide guidance to assist in these objectives. To deliver positive behavioural change within BIAZA members and stakeholders. 

ROLE DESCRIPTION:
EISWG members contribute to the overall objectives of the group by: 

  • Attending EISWG meetings: Between 3 and 5 meetings are usually held each year, most are online but one per year is typically in person, at a BIAZA member zoo/aquarium.  
  • Supporting the BIAZA office in contributing to new resources wherever possible and assisting with responding to queries from BIAZA members and other interested parties.  
  • Assisting with development and review of relevant BIAZA policies. 
  • Contributing to relevant comms, e.g. articles for BIAZA website, presenting at conferences etc.  
  • Helping to establish links between BIAZA and appropriate external organisations and agencies. 
  • Encouraging adoption of best environmental practice models and sharing of emerging best practice. 
  • Encouraging monitoring of environmental performance relative to key performance indicators.
